Earlier today, Mac video professionals began reporting that their computers were crashing, and many attributed the problem to Avid’s Media Composer editor. The issue instead lies with a piece of Google software that helps keep Chrome up-to-date.

Version 1.2.13.75 of Google Keystone (Google Software Update) recently shipped with a bug that damages the macOS file system on computers where System Integrity Protection is disabled. Also known as SIP, the OS security feature helps “prevent potentially malicious software from modifying protected files and folders on your Mac.” This issue also affects Macs that do not support SIP (pre-OS X El Capitan).

Google tells us that it has paused the roll out of Keystone 1.2.13.75 until a solution is developed. The company recommends taking the following steps to recover a machine affected by the bug until a fix is in place. (Update: Google this evening has issued new commands after running further tests.)

chroot /Volumes/Macintosh HD [note: “Macintosh HD” is the default]

rm -rf /Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate/GoogleSoftwareUpdate.bundle

mv var var_back # var may not exist, but this is fine

ln -sh private/var var

chflags -h restricted /var

chflags -h hidden /var

xattr -sw com.apple.rootless “” /var

Those Terminal commands will specifically remove the affected version of Google Software Update, and then restore the damaged portion of the file system. A system reboot is then needed. Users need to perform these steps in Recovery Mode, and root credentials are required.

Several Mac administrators have compiled a more technical explanation of what’s happening and the underlying issue that’s not related to Avid after all. Video professionals were particularly affected as System Integrity Protection has to be disabled to allow for third-party video card support. The majority of users should be unaffected as long as SIP is enabled, which is the default setting.

Google Now For Mac Os

It looks like Google's testing of Google Now Chrome integration for Chrome has come to an end. Google announced that the feature is ready for the masses, and it will be rolling out to the Chrome stable channel over the next few weeks. The design and function are virtually identical to what debuted two months ago in Chrome nightly builds—the same Google Now cards that are present on Android and iOS show up in Chrome's desktop notification panel in Windows and Mac OS X.

Despite the wider rollout, we get the feeling that Chrome on desktop isn't quite finished yet. Most people probably don't even realize Desktop Chrome has a notification panel, and putting Google Now cards there seems like a great way for no one to ever notice them. Chrome's Notification Panel icon shows up as a tiny bell in the system tray on Windows or the Menu bar in Mac OS, and clicking it opens the panel. Google Now cards silently appear behind this icon—there is no popup message, sound, or any other notification that a card is available. We suspect that many users ignore the little bell as 'just another tray icon,' and as a result, most users won't see any Google Now cards. We were hoping for something in a more prominent position, like on the new tab page, on Google.com, or anywhere in the actual UI of Chrome. Desktop Google Now also isn't a standalone product—it requires that the user have an Android or iOS phone in order to work.

Still, after two months of testing and no interface changes, Google seems happy with the design. The company says the rollout is starting today and will finish over the next few weeks. To join in on the fun you'll need an Android or iOS device with the Google Search app installed, and you'll need to be signed into desktop Chrome with the same account. After that, just repeatedly click that little bell icon and hope Google has a suggestion for you.
